Hello, people! Today is the 46th anniversary of the release of Stanley Kubrick’s THE SHINING and to celebrate, I’ve written an article for HorrorBuzz where I take a plunge into some of the overlooked themes of the film. Sorry for veering away from my usual comic-centric fare, but I’ll probably be doing that from time to time because, why not?
What sparked the idea for this article was my annoyance with why so many fans seem to think Jack Nicholson’s performance in the film missed the mark of portraying a man’s gradual decent into madness that Stephen King’s original novel presented. My take was always that this change in tone was purposeful because of what Kubrick wanted the Jack of his movie to represent, which was something far different and more subversive than King’s version.
